Sensors, IoT & AI for sustainable agriculture

Sensors for real-time nutrient monitoring, IoT-based growing systems and data-driven decision support.

Good nutrient management depends on knowing what is in the soil and the plant right now. In the LignoNANO platform project we develop a probe for real-time monitoring of nitrate concentrations in soils, and with Vahaa we developed an IoT-based soilless growing unit with its mobile application.

At programme level, the lab takes part in TARIM2030 (TÜBİTAK 1833 SAYEM), a digitalization programme for supply security, sustainability, innovation and transparency in food. A student team advised by the lab reached the finals of the TÜBİTAK 1512 programme with an AI-based automation concept for vertical farms.

Where this work stands

The outputs of this line are devices and systems rather than papers so far. The IoT-based soilless growing unit developed with Vahaa under a TÜBİTAK TEYDEB 1501 project became a commercial product in 2022, the Arzum x Vahaa Smart Garden, whose plant science, from nutrient solutions to plant selection, comes from our lab. The nitrate probe is at the prototype stage within the LignoNANO platform, and the smart agriculture automation device developed with MANAKİN has been installed on campus since 2022. Publications on the sensing work will be listed below as they appear.
